A LITTLE CLARITY

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. Files are read, decoded and encoded locally in a Web Worker. The website downloads its own code and, when needed, its bundled image codecs. It never sends your images, filenames, thumbnails or metadata to a server.

Which formats can I convert?

Still JPG, PNG, WebP, supported HEIC/HEIF (HEVC) and AVIF images can be converted locally to JPG, PNG or WebP. JPG, PNG and WebP to AVIF use a tested local encoder, with a 16 MP output cap and device memory limits. Native codecs are used where reliable, with lazy WASM fallbacks. DNG development is checked automatically in beta. HEIC/HEIF output, sequences, GIF, BMP, ordinary TIFF and other camera RAW formats are not enabled.

Does conversion preserve metadata?

Original EXIF, GPS, creation timestamps and ICC profile metadata are not copied. Browser decoding handles orientation, and the canvas uses an 8-bit sRGB output strategy. Wide-gamut and HDR rendering can vary between browsers.

Is DNG or Apple ProRAW supported?

A real LibRaw WASM development path is implemented, with successful iPhone 12 Pro, Ricoh GR III and a user-confirmed untouched iPhone 14 Pro Apple ProRAW sample at its stored 44.6 MP resolution. Additional 12 MP/native 48 MP variants remain unverified. Experimental processing uses full RAW pixels, never an embedded JPEG preview. It may fail for a camera or codec, and its rendering can differ from Apple Photos or Lightroom.

What are the file and image limits?

Standard files may be up to 100 MB; DNG source files up to 256 MB. A batch can hold 24 files and 256 MB of inputs, with 256 MB of retained outputs. Desktop standard images are limited to 50 MP. RAW allows up to 50 MP on desktops reporting at least an 8 GB memory hint, or 26 MP when the hint is unavailable; mobile or low-memory devices use 16 MP and 12.5 MP. A side cannot exceed 16,384 pixels. Processing runs sequentially and stops standard files after 120 seconds and RAW after 300 seconds. RAW also has a conservative memory budget that includes retained outputs. These browser hints do not measure available RAM.

What happens to transparency and animation?

PNG, WebP and AVIF preserve transparency in processed pixels. JPEG uses your chosen background color. Animated PNG, WebP, HEIF and AVIF are rejected so frames are never silently lost. GIF is not enabled.

Does PNG preserve my original RAW data?

No. PNG encodes the developed 8-bit pixels without further loss, but RAW development changes sensor data, color and dynamic range. Keep the original RAW as your archive. This app does not produce 16-bit or HDR output.

Is it free, and do I need an account?

Conversion is free and needs no account. Hosting is designed for Vercel Hobby within its eligibility rules and usage limits; that does not mean unlimited traffic or guaranteed zero cost at every scale.
